Huddersfield science company Lubrizol helps local women’s football club reach goals with funding boost

13/01/2024

England’s Lionesses brought glory to their country with their barnstorming World Cup performance in 2023, and home-grown female football is going from strength to strength at Huddersfield Town Women FC – with support from a local science company.

Huddersfield Town Women’s Football Club has recently benefited from support donated by science company Lubrizol, which has a plant on Leeds Road.

The club’s open age first team finished sixth in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier – which is the third tier of women’s football and the highest level at which the players are amateurs. The team also won back the county cup and reached the third round of the Women’s FA cup.

Younger players have also been performing brilliantly with under-18s winning both the league and cup double, only losing one game in their entire season.

Frankie Bowes, captain of the Under-15s – who finished fourth in division 1 of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women & Girls League and reached their cup final – said: “Football means everything to me. If I’m not playing I’m watching it. Football will be in my life always. Huddersfield Town WFC has given me an opportunity to develop as a player and be part of a fantastic team.”

Lubrizol has helped support the club through its Charities and Communities Committee, at the request of one of the company’s IT managers, Yvonne Dunford.

Yvonne, of Huddersfield, who volunteers for the club as a parent helper, said: “This club is about giving girls the opportunity to play football. It’s great that Lubrizol supports the local community in this way. The money has been very gratefully received.”

Claire Hollingshurst, from Lubrizol’s Charities and Communities Committee, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to help Huddersfield Town Women FC. With the Lionesses’ fabulous performance in this year’s World Cup it shows that there’s no better time to support women’s football than right now.”

Huddersfield Town Women’s Football club is run entirely be volunteers with companies relied on for sponsorship to provide players with the kit, equipment and training facilities they need to give them the best opportunity to reach their full potential.
