COVENTRY is getting a culinary Christmas present in the form of a brand-new restaurant brand which will open on December 2, it has been announced.
Umami World Kitchen, which is a new global buffet brand, is set to open next month in the former COSMO Restaurant unit in Corporation Street which has remained closed since 2018.
The building has undergone a one-million-pound refurbishment programme and the flagship restaurant will be the first Umami in the UK, with a further five units planned next year.

Diners, who will pay one price for the eat-all-you-want buffet, will be able to choose from a range of 100 different cross-cultural cuisines including Chinese, Italian, Indian and Malaysian dishes.
Like its sister restaurant COSMO, Umami will operate from eight food theatres, where chefs cook and serve diners’ food in front of their eyes and will serve a wide range of cocktails, mocktails and bottomless soft drinks.
A spokesman said: “The restaurant is really starting to take shape and the overall look of the interior is very five-star, we think the people of Coventry will be impressed with the total transformation.
“We are delighted that the work is scheduled to be finished in time for the festivities. We expect Umami to be really popular with large families and groups because we will cater for so many different tastes all under the same roof.
“Naturally diners will be able to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner – with all the trimmings – but if that doesn’t take their fancy then we have so many other fantastic foods available from curries to sushi to Chinese.
“And we know Umami is going to be a hit with little ones who will be able to help themselves to as much ice cream, jelly and cake as they like – not to mention the chocolate fountain. Christmas is coming early in Coventry this year!”
The building has been completely gutted during the extensive refurbishment programme and the luxurious East meets West interior features expensive stonework, marble fittings and contrasting pale and dark timbers.
The buffets are in contrasting white terrazzo with blackened steel gantries which show off the fresh produce which is cooked and prepared in front of the customers.
The first-floor restaurant will also house shop units on the ground floor and apartments on the floor above the restaurant.
The restaurant is currently advertising for staff including receptionists, chefs and bartenders and potential candidates can apply now. More information can be found on the brand’s recently launched website which can be found at www.umamirestaurants.co.uk
